2024 Armed Forces Day: Gov Diri performs wreath laying

As part of activities marking the end of the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration, Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, on Monday, laid a wreath in commemoration of the day.

Governor Diri, on arrival at the at the Peace Park in Yenagoa, received national salute from the parade, after which he inspected the Guard mounted by men of the Armed forces before proceeding to perform the wreath laying ceremony.

Speaking after laying the wrath, the State helmsman said organising a celebration for the fallen heroes without honouring the serving military officers will amount to an empty annual ritual.

the Governor called for a paradigm shift from focusing on the fallen heroes and the legionnaires alone to the serving military, saying it’s the only way of motivating them for greater service.

The State chief executive called for the setting up of endowment fund and scholarship scheme to cater for the widows, widowers and the education of children of the fallen heroes and even for the serving military.

Appreciating the fallen heroes, the legionaries for their effort and sacrifice in maintaining peace, and security in the state and the country in general, the governor maintained that the commitment and loyalty of the Nigerian Armed Forces has contributed greatly in the maintenance of corporate existence of the country.

The Deputy Governor, Leader of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Monday Bubou Obolo, the Chief Judge of the State, Justice (Mrs.) Matilda Abrakasa Ayemieye, State chairman of Legion and other top military chiefs, Commissioner of Police took turns to lay wreaths at the Cenotaph after the firing of salvo.
