State of Emergency In Rivers State: Diri Urges Federal Govt. To Reconsider Stand

Urges FG To Inaugurates Reconciliatory Committee 

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State,  on Wednesday, called on the national assembly and the federal government to institute  a committee of eminent personalities to intervene and bring the constituted  government in Rivers State back to office.

Recall that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had, on March 18, 2025, declared a state of emergency on Rivers State, suspended Governor Siminalayi and members of the State assembly for six month, allegedly due to the lingering political stalemate in the state.

Governor Diri made the call at an  emergency Stakeholders Congress of the Ijaw National Congress, INC held at the Ijaw house in Yenagoa.

The State helmsam, harped on the importance of round table discussion, and appealed to Presodent Bola Tinubu  to reconsider its stance and allow for dialogue among the feuding parties.

He, noted that the Ijwa nation was not in conflict with the federal government, advised those exploiting the crisis in Revers State against the Ijaw nationality to desist.

Governor Diri, maintained that the ijaw nation alongside other ethnic nationalities made sacrifices for the nation’s unity and prosperity, noting that its enormous contributions are undeniable.

He called on all stakeholders of the ethnic nationality to continue to advocate for justice, fairness and inclusivity within the federal government.

Earlier in a welcome address, National Presiden of  INC, Professor Benjamin Okaba, said the stakeholders meeting was to cross fertilize ideas on ways of restoring enduring peace in Rivers State, one of the Ijaw States

Professor Okaba, urged the people of Rivers particularly those of Ijaw extraction to remain calm and peaceful following the declaration of State of Emergency in the state.

The INC topbrass called on all stakeholders to come together to brainstorm and proffer solutions to the recent happenings in the Niger Delta region as it affects them.

Other dignitaries at the meeting were, Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Amananabo of Twon Brass, King Alfred Diete -Piff, Former administrator of old Rivers State, Chief Rufus Ada-George 

immediate past deputy governor of Bayelsa State, Rear Admiral (Retired) Gboribiogha John-Jonah, Former Governor of Rivers State, Sir Gabriel Toby, lawmaker representing Nembe/Brass Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Mrs Maria Ebikake, Speaker of Bayelsa State House of Assmbly, Right Hon. Abraham Igobere, Secretary to the State Government, Professor Nimibofa Ayawe, Chief of State, Government House, Pastor Peter Akpe.

Others were, Chairmen of Rivers and Bayelsa States traditional rulers council, king-dandison-douglas-jaja-jeki-King Bubaraye Dakolo, Human Rights Activist, Ann Ankio-Briggs members of the State executive council and President  of IYC, Comrad Jonathan Lokpobiri among others.
